Montag is the main character in the novel. He is the major protagonist. In the beginning of the novel, Montag enjoys his job burning books and does not think too much about it. Then he meets a young girl named Claurise who tells him about what's wrong in the world. He then realizes he must stop the burning of books and the destruction of history. Beatty
Beatty is the main antagonist in the novel. At first, Beatty enjoys working as a fireman with Montag and then realizes that Montag is against the burning of books which angers him. Throughout the novel, Beatty tries to influence Montag that burning literature is proper and just and when he realizes Montag will not follow him, a full out conflict starts. This conflict ends by Montag incinerating Beatty in the final confrontation between the two characters.
Faber
Faber is another protagonist in the novel. Faber is Montag's teacher and mentor and he teaches Montag about the power of books and how they must be saved. Even though he controls Montag with the sea shell radio, Faber is a coward. He decides to send Montag out into danger while he stays at home and commands him. He is also opposed to Beatty and tries to convince Montag that Beatty is the bad guy. This side-conflict can be realted to The Book of Job in the Bible where god persuades the main character Job to follow the way of the Lord and not the way of the satan.
Clarisse
Clarisse is a young sixteen year old girl, who lives near Montag. She thinks differently about the world than others in their society. She asks questions about things in the world that some people don't even notice. She's considered anti-social, in her world, when she's actually very social in our world. She and her family talk together in their living room. During, her encounters with Montag we learn a bit of her family's past and she questions Montag happiness. A question that later haunts Montag throughout the book.
Mildred
Mildred is Montag's wife. She's OD's during the night and we later learn that it's actually a common thing that happens among people in this society. She went to a school where she learned to read lips and she has shell-shaped ear phones that plays ocean sounds in her ear. When asked about when or where her and Montag first met she can't remember nor care. She's doesn't really live in reality, she's stuck in her imaginaryworld with her "family" in the TV room. Unlike Clarisse, Mildred doesn't really think outside the book, let alone think.
Mechanical Hound
The Mechanical Hound is just what it sound like, a mechanical hound, just with some very interesting features. The Mechanical Hound has eight spidery legs, and needle teeth. It stares it's prey down with it's bright bulb eyes , before it injects them with it's deathly poison. It can be programmed to attack anyone the programmer desire. The Mechanical Hound can sniff out books and go after the holder. It's extremely dangerous and feared among the people.
